How to Make Pulled Pork on the Grill

What would a barbecue be without pulled pork sandwiches? Pulled pork has been a long time favorite recipe for many to use, especially because it is inexpensive to make. While it may seem intimidating to cook on a gas grill, even those who are new to grilling can easily make it with the right preparation. The secret to delicious pulled pork sandwiches lies entirely on how much patience you have, since it often takes over 24 hours of waiting time to finish it. To get the meat as tender as possible, it is very important to make sure you cook it slowly on a low heat.

Before you do anything else, you’ll need to make sure that you pick the right type of pork from your grocery store or local butcher. The most common and least expensive method is to use a pork shoulder roast, which is usually pretty affordable in most markets because it is not a choice cut. If you do not have a lot of time and are not worried about the price you can also opt to choose a pork tenderloin cut, which is generally much more tender naturally

There are countless pulled pork recipes available to choose from, but most of them are pretty similar in what spices are used to season the meat. Common rub ingredients typically include brown sugar, ground mustard, onion powder, garlic salt, and other basic seasonings you likely have on hand. They call dry rub “rub” a reason – you really want to make sure you cover the meat with it and rub it in as much as possible before allowing it to marinate in the fridge over night. While there is no definite rule as to how long the meat needs to marinate, generally the longer the better.

After the pork is nice and marinated, you’re ready to start cooking it on the gas grill. Many people prefer a smoker or a charcoal grill, but it’s also much easier to maintain a constant temperature on the gas grill. You’ll want to keep in mind some important grilling tips for cooking on a gas grill before you start cooking.

When you’re grilling pulled pork, you don’t want to grill it the traditional way like you would cook a steak. The secret to getting juicy and tender pork when grilling is to set up your grill to heat the food indirectly so it does not dry out. This can be set up rather simply by using the top rack to place the pork and then putting a pan of water on the bottom rack so it is between the pork and the grill burner. Once you have made all the necessary grilling preparations, the next step is to fire it up to be between 215 to 220 degrees. It takes a lot of patience – you’ll likely be waiting anywhere from 6 to 8 hours for it to be done. Once the meat has reached a temperature of 165 degrees and is cooked all the way through you are ready to take it off the grill to pull it apart.

Tearing the pork apart shouldn’t be too hard, especially if you have cooked it long enough. You can either use two forks or choose to use your hands while wearing gloves. Just be careful you don’t get burnt, since the pork will likely be very hot. Then you can decide to cover it in your favorite barbecue sauce and let it cook for another 10-15 minutes, stirring it and checking to make sure the sauce is still evenly coating it and not drying up. To serve the pulled pork, most people prefer it served on rolls to make a sandwich. Side dish ideas can be any of your favorite barbecue fare such as cole slaw or pasta salad.

Making pulled pork doesn’t require a lot of culinary skills, mostly you just need a lot of patience to make a great dish for your friends and family to enjoy. Enjoy your barbecue!
